Had the opportunity to hear one of the newer bands on the local rock scene in Trinidad and Tobago at Blue Martini in south trinidad yesterday.
I heard about Checklist recently on facebook and then saw them play live on Synergy. They definitely rocked it out in Synergy and showed much musical potential. I don't like to waste my time on noisy bands that really don't show much musicianship but this band, I just had to see live. I also heard about Jamion's singing a while back when he was in another band and being a fellow Pres man, you know, you gotta support the boys.
The night started out a bit late, the show was suppose to begin at 9 but ended up starting around 10:30 which was probably the only thing that was wrong with the night. Around 11:20pm, Checklist came on. Now, I had the pleasure of talking with some of the band members around 9 while we waiting for everyone to show. The thing that struck me the most is that these guys are good at what they do and aren't cocky about it - they're down to earth and fun to be around and I know their fans will love them for it.
If I had to describe their sound, I'd say that while they were rocking out with distortion, the lead vocalist maintained key throughout the songs, the lead vocalist shows great strength of both aggressive and also sympathetic vocal singing but its not just the vocalist that's good in this band. The lead guitarist with his 7 string guitar had perfect timing and quick fingers when not playing power chords while the bassist and rhythm guitarists also showed perfect taste in guitar effects without encouraging a noisy forum. The drummer was excellent and by far, he's definitely one of the better, talented, creative drummers I've heard in quite a long time. I loved the control while he was double kicking, it was not over excessive and maintained the same beats as their previous recordings and ensuring that the listeners were well entertained.
Overall, Checklist is definitely one of those bands you can go see with your friends and even your significant other. Their music in my opinion sounds mainstream and definitely deserves radio play and their songs have excellent hooks.
If you haven't seen them, you should support this band for the many reasons I have listed there.
Checklist, I salute you, keep on rocking Trinidad and Tobago. Don't ever break up, it would be a shame.
